Dr. Sawyna graduated from Muhlenberg College with a degree in chemistry and completed his medical training at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. During medical school, he spent two years conducting muscle ultra-structure, electronmicroscopic, and biochemical research in the Department of Anatomy. Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Sawyna was given the Lange Medical Publications Award.
Dr. Sawyna completed his specialty surgery training at Lehigh Valley Hospital and is licensed in the States of Pennsylvania and Florida. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, and a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Board certifications include the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Abdominal Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery and is a Center of Excellence
bariatric surgeon. Additionally, Dr. Sawyna is contracted as a surgical trainer for single incisional laparoscopic surgery (SILS).
Dr. Sawyna currently serves as Chief of Surgery and Director of Bariatric Surgery at Westfield Hospital
in Allentown, Palmerton Hospital, and Gnaden-Huetten Hospital, and serves as Co-Director of Bariatrics at Sacred Heart Hospital
As an avocation, Dr. Sawyna is an instrument rated pilot and a designated FAA aviation medical examiner.
